Some of the BEST Steakhouses on Long Island |
|
The Bountiful Gourmet’s The Good, The Bad and the Ugly of 2009 |
|
Morton's the Steakhouse 2777 Northern Boulevard, Great Neck (516) 498-2950 |
![]() The
Bountiful Gourmet has to admit that he loves finding great buys at
local restaurants, places that often slip by unnoticed but are true
treasures. Some of our best meals have been at places we just drove by,
saw a sign that caught our eye, and we were pleasantly (or not so
pleasantly) surprised. However, the Bountiful Gourmet also knows a good deal when he sees one, and when we were invited to a press party to kick off the new Morton’s Steakhouse “Bar Bites” menu, we couldn’t pass. For anyone who loves beef, Morton’s is well known for their huge portions, great quality, and not so inexpensive pricing. The Bountiful Gourmet has had some good steaks all across America, but Morton’s is up there with Ruth Chris, Peter Luger and other such rarefied names. The economy has really created some great bargains, and few could match Morton’s $6 Bar Bites menu. Yes, you heard me right, $6!!!! Well, what do you get for six bucks? Quit e
a lot actually. The Mini Cheeseburger Trio is a standout. The little
sliders actually equal more than a half pound of prime beef. They come
with cheddar cheese, tomato slices, iceberg lettuce (do without) and
onion served on silver dollar rolls. These morsels were delectable and
we could have devoured a half dozen or more of these without realizing
it. Our personal favorite was the Four Petite Filet Mignon sandwiches, with
mustard mayo on soft rolls. This is beef at its finest and we’ll be
returning to Morton’s just for another taste. Excuse me, I have to wipe
the drool as I write this. Chicken fingers lovers (oops, we’re sorry),
Chicken Goujonette lovers will enjoy the fried chicken strips, again
with the very tasty honey mustard. Want something lighter? How about trying the Crab, Spinach and
Artichoke Dip, with toasted bread croutons. A mighty tasty offering. Why is Morton’s being so generous with the goods? Like everyone else,
they want to stimulate business, and they know that once you tried the
bar bites, you will be tempted to take that next step up to the dinner
menu. And Morton’s is truly a place where the quality stands out.
Service is excellent and the comforting décor makes for a pleasant
evening of dining. |

Charlie
Brown's Steakhouse 2349 Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park (516) 294-7320 |
|
Like prime rib? I know we do. There are nearly a dozen great places
but our consistent winner would be any Charlie Brown’s, featuring great
chunks of beef at great prices; prime rib can go anywhere from $12.95
to $18.95 and comes with the best salad bar on Long Island. Stop into
the Charlie’s in Garden City Park and you can run into veep Steve Valentine,
who used to own the Ringside Club in Huntington, or if he’s not there,
say hi to general manager Kevin, former owner of The Rose & Thistle
in Huntington. Your kind of steakhouse. Join them for CB's Spring Flavors! |

Digger's
Restaurant 58 W. Main St., Riverhead (631) 369-3200 |
|
Also, the prime rib at Diggers in Riverhead is superior. It's a traditional
Irish Pub looking place, with brass and wood decor all over the place. The
prime rib is offered in sizes of 12 to 24 ounces, with potato, veggies
and soup or salad. They offer Danish-style baby back ribs. Many
beer taps and a decent wine list also. |

Moden
Snack Bar Route 25, Aquebogue (631) 722-3655 |

For something even further out on the island, don’t miss the prime rib
at the Modern Snack Bar in Aquebogue a delicious meal at rock bottom
prices, plus unbelievable homemade pies. Since 1950 this staple of the

They still have great burgers and sandwiches. Their menu includes such
East End favorites as Roast L.I. Duck, Fresh Flounder, and the places
famous Lobster Salad. Specials of the Day include Roast Loin of Pork,
Chicken Pot Pie, and Shrimp Parmesan, just to name a few. Close to the
vineyards and farmlands if you are visiting just drop by and enjoy the
great food. |
